All about Stitch: What makes him so popular?

Stitch is a very popular and loveable Disney character especially amongst kids. He’s feisty but adorable and extremely loving. He is also funny and kids (even adults) can strangely relate to him. Due to this, there are a plethora of Stitch toys available for children to start their own collection.

How did Stitch begin?

Stitch actually began earlier than when the public first met him. Chris Sanders created the adorable character in 1981 for a children’s book pitch which was never published. From that point Chris developed an animated feature starring the loveable character. 

The funny and cute character first hit the screens in 2002 in the first movie Lilo & Stitch under his original name Experiment 626. He is portrayed as an experiment alien that was created to make chaos across the galaxy. That is until he meets Lilo, who mistakes him as a dog and names him Stitch. From the moment children saw him on the screens he became a well-loved Disney character and has continued to soar in popularity recently with the younger generation too. 

Why is he so popular?

There are lots of reasons why this adorable character is so popular. From his funny and charismatic charm to his feistiness that gradually mellows to uncover his loving side. Stitch’s personality shines through in everything he stars in but is especially shown in the first movie. He learns a valuable lesson about having a family and what love is, which turns his personality completely. He also learns about finding a place you belong even when you don’t feel like you do, as long as you are with people who love you. 

He has become so popular through his journey of self-discovery and belonging on Earth, as well as his mischievous charm and loyalty to his family (ohana). He is also loved for his unique characteristics such as being a funny anti-hero, having an engaging backstory and the way he looks (cute floppy ears, adorable round eyes and almost dog like cuteness). Plus, his bond with Lilo has made him popular as they both feel lost and like they don’t belong but they form a beautiful, loving friendship.

What is his personality like?

Stitch is initially depicted as unlikable to many, except to Lilo, due to his destructive and temperamental behaviour. Characters that hate him in the first movie describe him as ugly and deformed whilst characters with affection, like Lilo, see him as cute and fluffy. 

In his true evil form, with an extra pair of legs and spikes, Stitch is worrying and a little scary as this is when his destructive behaviour is shown. But when he hides his true appearance to be more likeable to live with Lilo and tries to be good, he begins to show a loving, well-natured and caring side that resonates with the audience. His personality shifts from what he is programmed to do, to creating his own unique loving and hilarious personality. 

He is also quite emotional and childlike which helps kids relate to him. These personality traits bloom when someone understands and has sympathy for him. 

What are his abilities & weaknesses?

Stitch has many abilities that he was programmed to do by his creator Dr Jumba. He is fireproof, bulletproof, super-strong, he can think fast and see in the dark. He can easily survive being shot by plasma projectiles and he always quickly thinks of ways to get out of trouble, such as escaping being captured. Plus, he can make amazing things out of ordinary items when needed!

Stitch lifts cars and rips off doors showing his super strength and he also can climb any surface due to a sticky substance in his hands. He can become an amplifier, radio and microphone too!

However, with all of his abilities, he does have some weaknesses. One unique and less known weakness is that he is ticklish. But the main weakness is that Stitch doesn’t like water as he can’t float or swim because of the way he is built, he just sinks and drowns. He can also suffer with seizure-like glitches as his molecules weren’t fully charged when he was created.
